What's happening in Thomastown

SUSLIVING
Gardening & Horticulture Workshops at
 Thomastown Town of Food Initiative
IMG_0573
The Thomastown Town of Food Gardening & Horticulture workshops are led by Susliving’s resident horticulturalist Elmer Dool and cover a wide range of useful and practical topics including Garden Design & Planning, Rainwater Harvesting, Composting and Garden Fruit.
Running in the Food Campus in Thomastown, these workshops are part of a series of ten in total and have been a great success. Despite some unfavourable weather conditions, the Gardening & Horticulture workshops have been a great source of learning and have also produced an initial set of constructed raised beds and compost bays which will be used in the Town of Food garden.

  • Concert Hall, Marsh's Street, Thomastown
  • The Thomastown Tidy Towns Committee will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, February 18th at 7:30pm in the Concert Hall, Marsh’s Street, Thomastown.

We are delighted to announce that our guest speaker will be Mr Liam Mannix, Project Manager of the Irish Walled Towns Network.

We are a community group doing work on behalf of and for Thomastown and we would like to know more about what you think we could do. We would be pleased if residents of Thomastown and the surrounding areas would join us on the night to learn more about our activities, take a look at what we have done recently and to make suggestions. Your input is invaluable to us and Thomastown. This year we will be able to tell you more about the Upper Paddock Project and it’s benefit for the Town.

We hope to see you there!

A Little Loveliness of Ladybirds

Collective nouns for wildlife are often charming, a Flock of Sheep, a Clutch of Chickens or a Stand of Flamingos or there can be a sinister feeling to the sight of a Murder of Crows or a Swarm of Bees. But is there anything more wonderful than discovering a Loveliness of Ladybirds tucked away on a winters day.

At the edge of the Quay Car Park in a Teasel head (Dipsacus fullonum) sheltering from the cold and wind such a discovery was made.

Don't worry we didn.t pick the Teasel Head, but as it was almost 6 foot high I needed to gentle bend it down to allow the children a closer look.

Some wildlife need to find secure, warm and dry hideouts to see out the winter months. Teasels head provide shelter for Ladybirds. This year it was widely reported that Ladybirds were discovered in Christmas Trees and became active when the trees were brought into warm houses.  Have you encountered any Loveliness of Ladybirds this winter? Have you any photos to share?
